Hiking in Nantua: why go in September?

September in Nantua: the ideal season for hiking in the Haut-Bugey

Summer is slowly coming to an end, but the beautiful days certainly aren't.

In Nantua, September is one of our favorite times to explore the Haut-Bugey region.

The landscapes are beginning to change color, nature is regaining its calm, and the temperatures are perfect for long days outdoors. With your hiking boots on and your backpack on, the lakes, forests, cliffs, and peaks of the Haut-Bugey region are easily accessible from L'Embarcadère.

Why go to Nantua in September?

In September, the hustle and bustle of the summer holidays gradually gives way to a more peaceful atmosphere.

It's the perfect time to slow down: go for a walk in the morning, stop to admire the view of Lake Nantua, have a picnic in the heart of nature, and return to the comfort of the hotel at the end of the day.

The Haut-Bugey region is particularly well-suited to this desire for escape. Around Nantua, the trails alternate between lake shores, forests, limestone hills, and spectacular viewpoints. The Tourist Office also points out that hiking is especially conducive to observing the colors of nature as autumn approaches.

3 hikes to discover Nantua in a different way

1/ The Fècles Loop: Gaining a High View of the Lake

8.9 km • approximately 3 hours 30 minutes • 510 m elevation gain

This is probably one of the best hikes for a first visit to Nantua.

As you gradually climb the mountainside, the lake reveals itself from different perspectives until you reach the Colonne viewpoint.

With a little discretion, it's even possible to spot the chamois that inhabit the higher elevations.

A beautiful route to understand what makes the Nantua landscape so unique: a lake nestled between the Jura mountains.

2/ La Roche Merveilleuse: for hikers who want more

For a more challenging day, head to La Roche Merveilleuse, also known as the "Tour d'Horizon" (Horizon Tower).

This hike offers multiple panoramic views and allows you to admire not only Lake Nantua, but also Lake Sylans.

The route notably passes by the Maria Mâtre rock and several remarkable viewpoints, including the Column, Font de Sème, and the Marvelous Rock.

A wonderful way to dedicate a whole day to exploring the landscapes surrounding Nantua.

3/ Lake Genin: A touch of Canada in the Haut-Bugey

Looking for a change of scenery? Just a few kilometers from Nantua, Lake Genin offers a completely different atmosphere. Nestled among spruce trees, this small mountain lake is a superb destination for combining hiking with exploring the landscapes of the Haut-Bugey.

The hiking journalists from GR Sentiers, invited to explore the area, describe arriving at the lake as a true change of scenery with Canadian influences.
